How to get started with Google Now

As you navigate your Android 4.1 Jelly Bean-stocked phone or tablet, you might come across a new, built-in feature called Google Now.

Often mislabeled as a Siri competitor, Google Now is not an intelligent voice recognition service. Instead, it's a built-in assistant that serves up Google search-based answers to voiced questions.

Google Now also tries to give you those answers before you even pose a question by predicting the data you want, based on your search history.

Voice search and shortcuts

To access Google Now, swipe up from any screen. Whether you're in the browser, at a home screen, or anywhere else, you'll always be able to call up Google Now by swiping up from the bottom edge of the screen.

At the top of the Google Now interface, you'll see a standard search bar. Here you can type your search term, or say, "Google" to activate voice search. Once you say "Google" you can perform a search, or use one of these search shortcuts.

With some searches, like for sports teams and definitions, Google Now will "speak" the found data out loud. (For a demo, watch the video above.)

Top 5 Android malware troublemakers ID'd (Share)

A security company has identified five leading types of malware in the wild that could be dangerous to Android phone and tablet users, including one that snags personally identifiable information and another that can send and read text messages.

SophosLabs said Thursday it examined statistics from the installations of its Android mobile security app on devices in 118 countries, and the "volume of malware that we've discovered highlights that mobile security is a real and growing problem, especially on Android," said Graham Cluley, senior security consultant at Sophos.

"Criminals are creating more and more targeted malware for different platforms, and smartphone users need to wise up to the fact that security is no longer limited to PCs, but mobiles and tablets are also at risk if not sufficiently protected."

There are now more than 460,000 apps in the Google Play market for Android, according to AppBrain, although there are other sources for downloading Android apps. And it is those other sources than can cause trouble.

Chet Wisniewski, senior security advisor at Sophos, told msnbc.com that most users get infected when they "side-load" apps. "This is the act of loading programs from non-official sources ... Often they are 'paid' apps offered for free by pirates who load them up with mobile Trojans."

Naturally, there isn't any obvious way to know when you've been infected, he said. "You might find out when charges appear on your mobile phone bill, or if your accounts start to become compromised. The best approach is to run security software on your phone to screen for anything malicious."

HTC Android 4.0 ICS updates list expands

Over at the quietly brilliant manufacturer HTC’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich list expansions are happening everywhere with new phones added to the list and phones already on the list getting updated schedules. This list is what HTC considers its nearly-definitive list of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates and can therefor be trusted about as far as you can trust any list on earth. Notably absent from the list are all of the HTC tablets released to date – you’ll have to go rogue if you want that kind of hardcore underground tasty treat action.

HTC has added quite a few of their 2011 smartphones to the list, with such beasts as the HTC Sensation already grabbing the update before this list expires their expectation for update dates. For example the HTC Sensations expected update range is between March and June of 2012, while our T-Mobile (4G) version has it already. This means you can expect your update for these devices on the list well before HTC promises you’ll have them.

DROID Incredible 2 by HTC : To be determined (by the end of August)
HTC Amaze 4G : May-June
HTC Desire S : June-July
HTC Desire HD : July-August
HTC EVO 3D : June-July
HTC EVO 4G+ : May-June
HTC EVO Design 4G : June-July
HTC Incredible S : June-July
HTC Sensation : March-June
HTC Sensation 4G : March-June
HTC Sensation XE : March-June
HTC Sensation XL : April-Jun
HTC Rezound : June-July
HTC Rhyme : June-July
HTC Thunderbolt : July-August
HTC Velocity 4G : March-June
HTC Vivid : March-June

The folks at HTC have noted specifically that devices with 512MB of ROM or less will not be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. This includes smartphones such as HTC ChaCha, HTC Salsa, HTC Wildfire S, HTC Explorer, and several more older, less awesome phones. HTC has also let the world know that the tablets HTC Flyer, HTC EVO View 4G, and HTC Jetstream will remain on their current version of Android, that being Android 3.0 Honeycomb. HTC is also clear to make the differentiation between support and upgrades:

“Upgrades are not the same thing as ongoing support. Devices not being upgraded to Android 4.0 will still get software improvements, security fixes, and technical support as needed.” – HTC

So don’t fret, those of you with the Facebook phones and the tablets galore, HTC will still help you move forward, just not to a new dessert! Along with this also comes the fact that many phones getting Android 4.0 will not get Sense 4.0, instead working with Sense 3.6, another less needy version of the software. The HTC Sensation is one example of a device that HTC Sense 4.0 cannot exist on due to its requirements for some certain bits of dedicated hardware.

Share — Best games for the iPad (and Android tablets, too)

The iPad and other tablets are amazing gadgets with so many capabilities. There are apps that are revolutionizing medicine, science, art, music and business. But let's be honest: We really love the games.

With tens of thousands of games to choose from, however, it can be hard to separate the winners from the losers. And with game prices ranging from $1 to yikes! you definitely don't want to buy before you try without some trusted guidance.
That's why I'm here for you. My Top 8 games will give you hours of entertainment at home and on the road.

World of Goo ($5, iOS; Android) - This fantastic physics puzzler has long been one of the most downloaded games because of its unique concept - building up complex structures and machines using blobs of goo. You have to work fast, though, because these sticky little guys aren't the most stable of building blocks!

Where's My Water? ($1, iOS; Android) - This game follows in the whimsical tradition of many game apps. The object of the game is to dig holes to fix a sewer alligator's shower. You'll be hooked on the challenging puzzles. Where's My Water? was downloaded more than 1 million times in its first month of release. There's also a free version with limited levels and options.

Flight Control HD ($5, iOS; $3, Android) - Guiding planes and helicopters to a safe landing is as easy as drawing a line to mark their paths. Careful though! It gets harder. Flight Control HD proves that simple games can be the most fun. You'll juggle flight trajectories and keep the helicopters from crashing in this addicting game.

Pool Bar: Online Hustle ($3, iOS; $1.50, Android) - Maybe you need a change of pace from all the fast-paced action and tilting games. Why not turn your tablet into a pool table using Pool Bar: Online Hustle? The ball physics are flawless, and you can move the camera to view the table from any angle. Pool Bar supports two-player interaction and three different game modes.

Battleheart ($3, iOS; Android) - Battleheart is a frenetic dungeon-crawling experience. Recruit medieval warriors and wizards and equip them to rid the kingdom of monsters. Don't be fooled by the cute characters - this game is difficult. You'll have to be strategic and quick-fingered to defeat some of the more difficult beasts.

Anomaly Warzone Earth HD ($4, iOS; Android) - Wonder what it's like to be on the other end of a tower-defense game? Anomaly Warzone Earth turns the tables on the popular genre. Select your attacking forces and plan a route through a heavily fortified alien battleground. A good strategy will get your forces through to the other side. The graphics look great and the re-playability is endless.

Fruit Ninja HD ($3, iOS; Android) - If you don't feel like thinking (and let's be honest, you can't always feel like thinking!) Fruit Ninja HD offers endless, glorious hours of total mental shutdown. Use your finger to slice up fruit as it flies across the screen. Just avoid the bombs and that's it. Get extra points for carving up multiple fruits with one swipe. Fruit Ninja also comes in a free version with limited features.

Sonic CD ($5, iOS; Android) - Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time. Sonic CD, his most critically acclaimed adventure, was released in 1993. Now, almost 20 years later, your favorite spinning blue hedgehog is back and better than ever.

According to the report from Engadget, Samsung has started to roll out Android 4.0 to Galaxy Notes in Europe finally.

In addition to the usual behind-the-scenes OS stuff, the 319MB heavy update also includes revamped S Note and S Memo apps and widgets. And then there's also a new version of Fudo's beloved TouchWiz.

Most of Galaxy Note owners are waiting for the Ice Cream Sandwich before first quarter in 2012, but Samsung back in March announced that the "premium suite upgrade" that would accompany the Android 4.0 update wouldn't launch until the second quarter. Samsung said that the update would be rolled out worldwide. Now the Europe users get this update first, I think people in the US and around world can get Android 4.0 sooner. Actually, if you have rooted your Note, you can use Android 4.0 now if you didn't want to wait anymore.

Before getting the ICS update, let's enjoy the video from official.

Only 4.9% Of Devices run Android Ice Cream Sandwich

According to the latest report from Google Play Store data, there are only 4.9% of all Android devices with Ice Cream Sandwich. But it till be a significant increasing from last month's 2.9% penetration rate while Gingerbread remains running on nearly two-thirds of devices.

Why Android 4.0 get this tiny increase? At first, Google and Samsung have pushed out updates to the Galaxy Nexus S 4G in the U.S., as well as to the Galaxy S II in markets outside the U.S. And then, HTC One X, One S (only for T-Mobile) and One V had released in several markets. These two devices run Android 4.0 out of the box. Last, Sony is providing Android 4.0 updates to several of its Xperia smartphones outside the U.S.

Despite its weak presence in the market, Android 4.0 is set to climb quickly in the coming weeks and months. The HTC One X, in particular, is an outstanding Android smartphone and will surely be a hit with AT&T subscribers. Same applies to the HTC One S for T-Mobile. These are two exciting devices that will expand Android 4.0's footprint. Additionally, Sony is prepared to deliver Android 4.0 to a growing number of its Xperia smartphones in the coming weeks.

We also can't forget the Samsung Galaxy S III, which is being launched May 3 by Samsung. This device also will ship with Android 4.0 and should become available before the end of June. Given how successful Samsung's previous generations of Galaxy devices are, the S III is expected to be a smash hit.

And according to the announcements from HTC, Motorola, LG etc. more and more android phones which produced in 2011, will get update of Android 4.0. I think there must be a android 4.0 boom in the late of 2012. Just hold on and keep waiting.

Draw Something arrives in the Amazon App Store for the Kindle Fire

Draw Something has amassed many users in its time on Android and it has now made the leap onto a device that is suggested to of have captured half of the US Android market share. Yes, Draw Something is now available in the Amazon App Store for the Kindle Fire. You get two options to choose from, the free ad-supported version or you can pony up the $1.99 and go ad free. Hit the source link for the downloads or just go ahead and load up your Amazon Kindle Fire and get to drawing something fun.

Drawing is a really funny thing. Most people fall into one of two categories: excellent or incredibly terrible. What better way to expose people and complicate the matters further than by forcing you to use your chubby fingers to draw crude, cave painting-like images with a friend, and then try to guess what the other person drew? Well, that seems to be the thinking at OMGPOP, because they made a little game called Draw Something that does just that, and it's all the rage these days.

The premise is ridiculously simple: pick a word from a list of three, try and draw it using different colors and brushes, then send it along to your friend and see if they can guess the correct word. Guessing is aided by the fact that your letter selection isn't infinite; on the contrary, you're only given a small handful of letters that aren't in your word, so as long as you can discern what you need, you'll be fine.

Now, which is the best free online storage for you?

Today, we should talk about which one online storage is best for you. At first, we need bypass iCloud because it's only available in Mac and iOS and today we will talk about those cross-platform servers. As we known, on Tuesday morning, Google announced its own storage service called Google Drive. Now, we have Dropbox, Skydrive, Google Drive, Box and other online storage servers. About the storage server, I only pay attention to 2 points.

1. We all concern about the free storage when we use a free online storage servers. Actually, most of people needn't a large volume storage because the large file you'd better take with removable disk if the network is not so good. As for me, I am using skydrive, but never used the storage above 2G. If you really need upload some big stuffs in case, I think Skydrive is the best choice for you.

Free storage
Dropbox: 2G
Skydrive: 7G~25G
Google Drive: 5G
Box: 5G

2. We should care about the cross-platform now. More platforms support, more convenient. Fortunately, all of those 4 servers support web upload, so we do not worry about is there windows version or mac version. Just like we ignore iClound because it only have Apple version.

Support platform
Dropbox: Windows, Mac, ios, Android, Blackberry
Skydrive: Windows, Mac, ios
Google Drive: Windows, Mac, Android
Box: Windows & Mac(web only), ios, Android, Blackberry

I think both 2 point can totally make a decision for me. So the first choice for me is Skydrive between my workplace and home. Dropbox is the second for my phone and computer. Don't like Box because of the bad network make it become nothing on web browser. Google Drive? Hummm, I should try it later. Here is the 3 Best Online Storage Apps on Android which I wrote before Google Drive come out. If you are interested in it, you can try it.

So, do you have any more great free online storage server? Please leave your comment!

Which is the best Android phone out there right now?

Which is the best Android phone out there right now?" -- the headline of this story -- is the single most common question I get asked on a day-to-day basis. And it's understandable; after all, budget considerations not withstanding, everyone wants to feel like they're buying the best of the best.

Spoiler alert: There will be no definitive answer to that question provided here today. Or anywhere, any day (not one that matters, at least). While occasionally a device comes along that raises the bar in some exciting new manner -- the Galaxy Nexus, for example -- generally speaking, there is no single "right" answer for everyone. It all comes down to what you want.

In the case of Android, we're at the start of what promises to be a spectacular streak of high-end device launches. With Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) out in the wild, manufacturers are finally starting to release their new flagship phones built around Google's latest and greatest mobile OS.

One of the first such handsets to hit is HTC's One S, which goes on sale for $200 (with a new contract, following a $50 rebate) next Wednesday on T-Mobile. I've been using the One S for a few days now, and as I wrote in my review, it's a standout phone if I've ever seen one -- a premium device that handily earns its spot among the Android elite.

So naturally, certain questions are bound to follow -- questions like: "Should I get the One S instead of the Galaxy Nexus?" "What about the Droid Razr? Is it better than that?" And: "How about that elusive Galaxy S III? Should I maybe hold out for it?"

How to clear app cache or data to make your android phone run faster

Apps sometimes can misbehave. Before you go reaching for that task killer (don't do it!) here's something else to try. Above is the screen you'll see if you go to Settings>Applications>Manage appliations and tap on an app. You've got a bunch of buttons and numbers. The top buttons are pretty self-explanatory -- force stop makes an app quit. Uninstall either uninstalls an app -- or if it's permanently loaded onto the phone (like the Android Market should be), you'll have the option to uninstall updates.

But when we have a misbehaving app, first thing we'll try is to clear the cache. That wipes out temporary files that might be causing trouble. Your app's still there, as are all your settings.

Clearing data is a little more drastic, basically giving you a clean installation of the app, with all of your settings and log-ins returned to zero. It's pretty much the same as uninstalling and reinstalling, just quicker.

So if you're having trouble with an app, try clearing then cache, or go all-out and clear data and see if that doesn't do it for you.

Finally, Instagram Android Version is Available in Google Play

Sorry for my always bad memory but I still remember that I have been told everybody that Instagram for Android is coming several days before (Here: Instagram For Android Runs Better Than iOS ). And now, it is available in Google Play. What's more, only 2 days past, this app had reached over millions of downloads.

Launched in 2010, Instagram has been exclusive to the iPhone (and camera-enabled iPads) because Instagram's CEO Kevin Systrom wanted it to be perfect. Systrom was quoted as saying Instagram for Android is "one of the most amazing Android apps you'll ever see."

The Android version should be virtually identical to the iPhone experience with the exception that Tilt Shift/Blur, Share from Feed, Live Preview and Share to Flickr are absent till now.

In terms of functionality, the Android application itself is identical to its Apple iOS cousin, featuring simple flash controls and a camera-switch button to alternate between front-facing and rear-facing cameras with a single tap. Unfortunately, the application still lacks spot-focusing, cropping and zooming after a picture has already been taken.

As a newer in Android, Instagram still have some bugs need to be fixed. With so many Android phones available with all ranges of cameras surely this was a task that will probably take another update or two.

You can download it in Google Play: Instagram

Instagram For Android Runs Better Than iOS

As the most popularphoto-filtering and sharing app on the iPhone, Instagram finally comes to Android sooner.

Co-founder Kevin Systrom announced at SXSW Sunday that the long-awaited Android version of Instagram is nearly here. He teased the version on stage, but didn’t provide a demo. The Android version is currently being tested in private beta and will be released "very soon".

“In some ways, it’s better than our iOS app. It’s crazy,” Systrom said. Running on a Galaxy Nexus, the Instagram app apparently looks great on larger-screened devices, which makes perfect sense to use considering the app’s content is gorgeous photos. The iPhone’s screen sometimes feels a little too constrained for Instagram, and more real-estate can only be a good thing.

Instagram for Android has been a long time coming, and while the wait isn’t quite over yet, the fact that the social network is talking it up at SXSW give us hope that we may not have to wait too much longer. While others have tried to replicate Instagram for Android users, they have failed to capture the essence of an app and a network that has made Instagram one of the most used apps on iPhones.

Whatever, before Instagram for Android release, we still have other great camera apps on Android to enrich our life. You can check the Top 5 camera apps for android in 2012.
